Eynsham Challenge

 

WRR took on ERR in the return leg of this year's Eynsham Challenge. An hour before the race the heavens

opened and the race look set to be a wet affair. But before the start the sun burst through to welcome the runners

to the start. The youngsters came to the fore for WRR with 5 of our first runners home being ex-juniors. Yet again

it was a really close affair (the last 3 challenges have been decided by one point) but WRR were victorious on

away soil for the second year running by 6-5. A big thank you to all who ran especially those who I couldn't

squeeze into the teams (36 into 33 doesn't go!). Well done everyone.

Man vs Horse Mountain Marathon event - 12 June

I ran it in 3h 41m and finished ahead of 4 horses (they must have been clapped out old nags!) - 98th out of 290 runners. It was the most amazing event run up and over three Welsh mountains and across three rivers on every sort of rough terrain you can imagine. The scenery is stunning and it is completely surreal (and sometimes rather alarming) to be running alongside horses and riders. The only reason there is any chance of beating a horse over the distance seems to be that horses aren't very good at covering very long distances over rough ground and that they really struggle going up and down very steep slopes (of which there were plenty). Runners also struggle going up and down very steep slopes - but unlike horses they are daft enough to keep going even when exhausted! It is a really extreme event, not for the faint hearted, but there is a great atmosphere and a tremendous reception at the finish when you drag yourself across it - lots of tea and sandwiches made by the locals! None of the runners beat the fastest horse this year - the fastest runner was 10 minutes behind the fastest horse. Had a runner beaten the fastest horse they would have collected a £1,000 cash prize. A highly recommended event which I will definitely be going back to do next year (you can also run it as a relay team of three if you don't fancy trying the full distance).
